Recipe for a Sharp Mind

As a raw foods chef and a brain fitness aficionado, it makes perfect sense that I would come up with a “Recipe for Brain Fitness”. This “recipe” combines what I know about food, nutrition & cooking with what I know about cognitive health. The idea is to provide an outline for an “ideal” day in terms of keeping your brain working at the highest-possible level! Granted, no day is going to unfold exactly like this, so this recipe is meant to be more of a blueprint for what a perfect day might look like from your brain’s perspective, rather than any sort of realistic schedule.

#1) Get a good night’s sleep!
#2) Start your day early with a short meditation and a large glass of water. No caffeine!
#3) Breakfast: one pint of green juice
#4) One hour of yoga
#5) Small serving of raw fruit, nuts or seeds.
#6) 2-3 hours of mentally stimulating work
#7) Lunch with a friend, consisting of a hearty salad (leafy greens, seaweed, nuts, sprouts, and variously-colored veggies)
#8) Post-lunch walk of 30 minutes
#9) A few more hours of challenging work
#10) 30+ minutes of aerobic exercise (swimming, biking, running, dancing)
#11) 20-30 online brain exercises
#12) Light, veggie-based dinner with few or no animal-based proteins. Eat early, at least 3 hours before you expect to go to bed
#13) Social time with your friends/family
#14) End the day with some mediation or journal-writing.

The basis for this agenda is the fact that your brain needs 5 main things: proper nutrition, physical exercise, social engagement, diverse mental stimulation, & sleep. If you leave any of these things out of your recipe, it will probably not turn out so well. Conversely, if you find a way to regularly incorporate all 5 of these things into your life, you may find that everything else comes a lot easier.

Looking at this a different way, there are a few keys things you want to avoid: a sedentary or solitary lifestyle, sugar, over-eating, stress, TV, and complacency/routine/monotony. Too much of any of these and you an easily get yourself into trouble!

BrainBall Task 2.17

This task is very simple. Every couple seconds, a colored square will appear on the screen. If it is orange or blue, click your mouse. If it is green or purple, hit the spacebar. If it is red, do nothing.
Your score is based on how quickly you react versus how many mistakes (choosing the wrong action) and errors (acting when piece is red) you make.

BrainBall Task 2.16

This is a interesting game of memory. You will be presented with a series of pieces, each of which is labeled with a number. This number indicates how long the piece will remain active, in seconds.
When you are presented with a piece, you can drag it and place it into any one of the empty boxes. Once you do so, the box will close (obscuring the piece) and the piece will begin its countdown.
The object is to track each piece you place and try to reveal it (by clicking on the box to open it) right before it reaches the end of its countdown. The closer the countdown is to 0 when you reveal the piece, the better you will score. However, if you wait to long the piece will expire and you will get no points.
There are a total of 12 boxes for you to use, so you can have up to 12 pieces in play at one time. You may place a piece in any open box.

BrainBall Task 2.15

The goal of this task is to eliminate the pieces from the board by making connections between similar pieces.
Each piece has three properties, color, shape and number. In order to match pieces, they need to have at least one element in common.
The pieces are arranged into rows. You need to move from row to row making matches. Once you choose a piece in the first row, you need to pick on in the second row that has the same color, shape or piece. You work down the rows and then cycle back to the top once you reach the bottom.
To eliminate all the pieces, you need to strategically play them and make sure you always have a way to get from one row to the next. If you get stuck, you can use the BACKSPACE or LEFT key to move backwards through your moves and attempt a new path. There is always at least one solution.

BrainBall Task 2.14

In this task, you are presented with a grid of pieces. Each piece has two characteristics: shape and color.
After 15 seconds the grid will reset and you have to try and recreate it as best as you can. Click on a piece to rotate through the shapes. Then, once you have selected a shape, you can adjust the color with the right and left arrow keys.
Your score is based on how many colors and shapes you get correct, with extra points for each piece that is correct in both characteristics.

BrainBall Task 2.13

This is a game of math and strategy. The game board consists of a grid of (blue) numbers and a bunch of (yellow) numbers. The object of the game is to use the yellow numbers to eliminate the blue numbers from the board.
To play, drag a yellow piece onto the boundary between two of the blue numbers. If the numerical difference between the two blue numbers is equal to the value displayed on the yellow number, the numbers will vanish and the board will readjust (empty columns/rows will collapse).

BrainBall Task 2.12

In this game you will be presented with a 4×5 grid of squares, each containing a letter. At any given time, all but two of these pieces will be changing at regular intervals, cycling upwards through the alphabet (from A to B to C and so on).
Your job is to pay very careful attention to the grid and locate the pieces that are stationary – that is the letter withing the grid piece does not change, When you believe you have found one, click on it. If you are correct, it will rotate to indicate succes and then begin cycling again. Meanwhile, a new spot will become stationary.
You score is based on how many of these spots you identify versus how many mistakes you make.

BrainBall Task 2.11

The object of this game is to associate colors with specific strings of characters, and using this information, correctly identify the color for a given string.
One by one, you will be provided with a target string. At first, you will have no idea which color it represents, so you will have to guess. When you guess correctly, make a mental note of the relationship and move on.
As you continue, you should learn the string for each color and eventually be able to connect them without having to guess.
Your score is based on how many you targets you find versus the number of guesses you need to make to get them.

BrainBall Task 2.10

In this task you need to translate a number into a location within a grid of squares. You are given a target number and you have to determine where in the grid that numnber lies.
The top-left square represents spot #1 and the spot numbers increases sequentially from left to right, wrapping from line to line – just as you read text. In a 10×10 grid, the top-right piece would be spot #10 and the bottom-right piece would be spot #100.
Each games grid will be a different size, making it more difficult to memorize specific locations. It’s probably best to count the width of your grid at the start and work from there,
Click on a piece when you think you have identified the correct spot. If you are correct you will get a new target.
Score is based on number correct with penalty for mistakes.

BrainBall Task 2.9

In this game, you need to drag a circle onto a target. The trick is that as soon as you grab the circle and begin to drag, the target will disappear.
Essentially, this task is about developing a feel for your mouse or keypad, learning to move it accurately without seeing the cursor.
You earn points for each attempt based on accuracy. The faster you play, the more opporunities you will have to earn points, so you will want to strike the perfect balance between speed and accuracy.
Be careful not to move your mouse outside the playing field; if you do, your attempt will be scored from the point where your mouse left the game area.

BrainBall Task 2.7

Seek out the target picture in the grid and click on it.
If you are correct you will get a new target and a new grid. Otherwise your incorrect guess will disappear and you need to continue looking.

BrainBall Task 2.8

The object of this task is to locate the group of colors within the grid. The colors must appear just as they do in the target piece.
Each target piece is a 3×3 grid of colored squares.
As you mouse over an individual square within the target grid, its associated 3×3 group becomes highlighed. When you have the correct group highlighted, click to make your selection.
Your score is based on how many targets you find versus how many incorrect guesses you make.

BrainBall Task 2.6

In this game you will complete the same activity 2 times. The first time you will be playing randomly, but the second time you will be working on memory.
Eliminate the pieces by dragging like numbers onto each other. Only specific combinations will work. Remember them.
You have only a limited time to complete each stage, so work quickly.

BrainBall Task 2.5

Match the line patterns. Each pattern has exactly one match.
Click on a pattern to select it, and then click on its match. (Or click a second time on the original piece to deactivate it)
Each line pattern is randomly rotated and therefore may not appear in the same orientation as its match.
