A different perspective on brain fitness

Of course, not everyone believes in the merits of brain exercise, and there are a fair share of studies that have concluded that such programs have no measurable effect on mental fitness. The author of this article/study suggests that leading an active life can be just as effective, and seniors need not worry about enrolling in some sort of brain gym. To an extent, I agree – living a richly stimulated life is probably more effective in staying sharp than the occasional computer game. However, few people are able to cover as much area in their day to day lives as you can with games. Certainly there are ways to utilize your verbal skills and memory in day to day life, but some of the executive functions – planning, problem solving – and things like visual/spatial skills are a little harder to come by in normal life, especially when older. So I still think there is a lot of benefit to brain workouts as it ensures that you are covering all the bases.

I strongly believe that exercising the mind helps keep it healthy. In that direction, I recently wrote a book entitled “Increase Your Brain Power.” A TV interview about it can be viewed at http://www.wfsb.com/video/18631985.
