take aim

Think for a moment how amazing our capacity to aim is. To see a target, assess its position in space relative to you, and then move your arm at the right trajectory and velocity (taking into account the phyiscal properties of the object you are throwing, and the influence of gravity) in order to hit it, is no small feat. And as is the case with many such activities that require integration of multiple cognitive functions, aiming is probably a great exercise for your mind.

Most of us get lots of aiming practice when young, but I imagine that few people use this skill often as adults. But don’t forget about it, it can be a great tool for keeping your brain active and fit. There are many different activities that engage your aim in one way or the other and most of them are quite fun, so it shouldn’t be much of a sacrifice to work on this a bit. Perhaps the best way to integrate this into your life is to get a dart board and spend a few minutes every day tossing darts. If darts isn’t your thing, play an occasional game of toss with a ball of some kind. Or go bowling. Remember skee-ball, how fun is that?

Or, if you want something free and very accessible, gather up some coins and a cup, bowl or some other kind of receptacle and start tossing. Start close and work your way back. Just place a mat or something under the container to make it easier to collect your misses.

These are just a few ideas, but there are countless ways you can hone your aiming skills. Whatever it is, find something that works for you as it can be another step to maintaining a sharp and versatile brain.
